Warm Welcomes and Liquid Lies: My five day recoup in Queensland from my weeks as a Kiwi.

I just finished the three most unforgettable weeks of my life in New Zealand. I went there with two amazing friends and between the three of us it’s safe to say the trip was well documented and even better enjoyed. There were no less than 2.5 cameras per person and that is not including the point and shoot someone brought sans charger. He is a bit new to the way Matt and I travel but the trip would not have been the same without him. As a matter of fact what made this trip the best yet was having those two with me all along the way. There has to be something said for such a thing. I got so used to travelling alone, and I love it, that I sometimes forget just how amazing it could be with the right friends/personalities. So since we have enough media and memories for a multi season long mini-series I will leave sharing that adveture for another time, perhaps a combined effort of some sort. I still think back to it, New Zealand. Part of me wants to go back now, the other part knows I undoubetdly will. One day.

Now this is not my first venture into Australia’s “Sunshine State.” That phrase is literally on every vehicles license plate so you know they mean business. There is a saying here that explains when it is raining that it is simply liquid sunshine. I don’t buy it either but when you average nearly 300 days of sunshine a year I suppose you are officially capable of making such a claim. Well the past four days here have provided enough liquid sunshine for this trip and the last it seems. It has “liquid sunshined” in some capacity everyday I have been here without fail. Some days have been more “sunny” than others but the bulk of my time on Moreton Island has certainly proven the most liquidy yet. So evidently you cannot go sand tabogoning when it is raining, I asked. I still had no shortage of things to do and the rain provided a unique way to explore a tropical island once again. There are 15 wrecks very near here that provide some amazing views both above water and below it. Of course it was raining during my time out but as I told the boat person who took me out there “it’s always raining underwater.” The heaps of fish did not seem to notice the inclement weather and I was awarded with the most spectacular views of fish yet. The current was real dodgy though I feel like the warning of “the current is a bit dodgy in some bits” was not enough. Little did I know the boat operator who took me out to sea was Kiwi, at least in another life. I should have known better but by the time I pieced together that she could have been from the North Island I was already too close to one of the wrecked, coral-fied, rusty knife wielding hulls. As funny as it sounds I literally crashed into a ship wreck. As someone else pointed out, someone who knew about my “ice bear” encounter in NZ, the Pacific Ocean must really like tossing me around. Hand raspberries aside the swim in and out of the wreckage was pretty incredible and more than worth it. It even beat out the sand dune rally I did on 4X4 the following day. That is the best thing one could do after a run in with a sunken ship covered in blades, ride a quad I mean.

Tomorrow morning. Asia. Indonesia more specifically. Bali to be exact.

Weekend in the City. Brisbane.

Ship wrecks. On purpose I am told.

It is said that most men lead lives of quiet desperation, some even by choice. The monks that choose to occupy this valley lead a life filled with strict vows of purity which, unsurprisingly, earns enormous merit. For them this is their escape -an oasis of serenity.

In a mind where the mere notion of Absurdism is well absurd ones divine purpose could easily be found in full light. Perhaps there is a feeling, a sincere sensation, that is divinity in nature.

Fittingly so these structures seem to grow from their rocky basins making these anachronistic monasteries seem purposely furtive and dangerous.

With Carthusian thoughts in mind and a keen sense of discretion I cautiously approach and begin my own ascension.

It is said that this is the earth’s navel and seat of the oracle.

This is what I know: Dhelfoi provides. From the foothills of Mount Parnassus to the olive tree filled valleys which lead back to the Mediterranean maze. This scenic sanctuary, this rich land (known to me as Delphi) has always attracted tourists, many of which with very large armys. The ancestors were kind enough to leave their temples, amphitheaters, and legends. I’ll settle for simple images, a perfect breeze, some self reflection, the unforgettable vista and all the olives I can mortally consume.

I like to think I left the most indelible of marks.

At one point nearly decimating most of the known world and at least one civilization. What remains is clinging on to a sea of blue-green and floating stones. Turn your gaze onto the land and you are shown various shades of red with bronzed Greek gods/goddesses.

Am I still sleeping? Surely I am dreaming, no place like this must exist. I pinch myself twice and I am not alone as my re-found friends seemed to have made it here with me.

Forgive my jealously Santorini but you hold a beauty I did not know I was searching for. All is emanating from your jagged cliffs and impeccable domes. Where to now? -This is your dare. “We will go anywhere!” -This is our claim. Your proclaimed perfect sunset calls. Breathless and dialed into your persephone I am stunned. Anxious for more I will meet your sunrise and raise you a day.

There is something dangerous and daring in the air, it’s at times hidden but seemingly everywhere. The people are not happy, this is what I read. “Chances are you’ve hurt a few if you’ve helped out someone,” this is what I was told. Your voice is on display and I thank you for showing me some truth. Your history precedes you as does your beauty. I am a mere traveler now with a closer perspective.
